June 2023 David, Keili, Dan, and Eric presented their research at SB3C in Vail, Colorado. Congratulations to Eric for winning 1st place in the undergraduate student paper competition! 

 

May, 2022 – Marc Cieslak from the BBC visits SimPL! Our interdisciplinary hockey concussion research study caught their attention so they flew in to shoot a feature that will be aired on BBC News in the UK, BBC World Service, and online. Marc thought that the UBC video production was “one of the best he’d ever seen coming out of academia” to the point that he thought it was a TV production. Keep an eye out for the press release in the near future…

 

Dec, 2021 – Happy Holidays! We had a great holiday party with colleagues from HUMBL and CARIS!

Sept, 2020 – Our CIHR Project proposal titled ‘A prospective and longitudinal investigation of concussive and subconcussive mild traumatic brain injury mechanisms in ice hockey’ is successfully funded in the recent Spring round!

Sept, 2020 – We welcome Timothy Wang, who graduated from the lab with a Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, to continue pursuing PhD studies with us!

June, 2020 – SimPL students Tim Wang (MASc) and Yi Yi Du (BASc) were finalists in the ASME Student Paper Competition at the Summer Biomechanics, Bioengineering, and Biotransport (SB3C) Conference, and Tim won 3rd place in Group A: Musculoskeletal, Bone and Head Injury Biomechanics!

March, 2020 – Given the recent COVID-19 outbreak, our lab is working remotely according to university guidelines (link). Everyone please stay safe and healthy!

March, 2020 – SimPL students Calvin Qiao and Cidnee Luu were among the top presenters at Mechanical Engineering’s 3 Minute Thesis Heat, and Calvin advanced to the University semifinal competition!

Feb, 2020 – Tim’s abstract “Investigating Immediate Effects of Controlled Soccer Headers on EEG: an Experimental Study” got accepted for oral presentation at the 2020 Ohio State Injury Biomechanics Symposium!

Dec, 2019 – Dr. Wu published an editorial in the British Journal of Sports Medicine titled “Sports concussions: can head impact sensors help biomedical engineers to design better headgear?” link

Oct, 2019 – Chris and Han presented a poster “Designing a Wearable EEG Cap to Monitor Ice Hockey Head Impacts” at the 2019 Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) Meeting in Philadelphia, USA.

Aug, 2019 – Dr. Wu chaired the Injury Biomechanics sessions and presented a talk on “Sensing the Brain during Mechanical Trauma: from Biomechanics to Functional Outcomes” at the 16th International Symposium on Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering and the 4th Conference on Imaging and Visualization in New York City.

July, 2019 – Dr. Wu is a recipient of the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research 2019 Scholar Award! Link

May, 2019 – We welcome new students in summer 2019: Christopher Knight, Derek Fong, Emma Park, Han Cat Nguyen, John Cookson, Sukhjinder Singh!

March, 2019 – We were successful in the competitive New Frontiers in Research Fund inaugural grant competition! We are funded for a project titled “Investigating Brain Trauma Accumulation from Subconcussive Head Impacts and Differences between Male and Female Ice Hockey Players”.

Sept, 2018 – We welcome new students in fall 2018: Adrien Noble, Cyrus Titina, Derek Fong, Timothy Wang!

June 2018 – We received seed funding from the UBC STITCH cluster to pursue a project titled “Wearable Electroencephalography and Electrooculography Device for Sleep Monitoring”!

Apr, 2018 – We were successful in the 2017 NSERC Discovery grant competition, for our research program “Biomechanical dose and real-time neurophysiological response during direct and whiplash head loading in humans”!
